Welcome to idlecomputa

Remarketing & Waste Specialists

Idlecomputa exists as a one man band in the sunny Hawke's Bay with an interest in the intricacies of computers and the way they work. Since the early days of learning how to build a unit from the bits and pieces left over from someone somewhere, it has become a successful business in its own right!

Over the years the hobby grew into a passion with an understanding surrounding the toxic levels of waste in a computer and the harm it has on our environment and ultimately human health. With several children of my own this became a personal crusade to do my small part and prevent the disposal off computers into our landfills. The days when we used to repair or reuse an unwanted item has long gone with the introduction of excessive  consumerism.  Material possession are mere accessories purchased for a variety of reasons but the reason for purchase being a necessity have long gone.

Disposal of computers is an easy and quick solution for most as we rarely think about the consequences of our actions until something goes awry. Toxic metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic leaches out of the computers and into our waterways and the surrounding environment. Contamination from any one of these poisonous chemicals can result in birth defects and death.

Surprisingly our councils allow this to continue despite the clear implications, not just to health but to the lucrative tourism market. Today we are campaigning with a 'clean green image' but the reality is far from the marketing claims and the slogan we all know.

Computers have become an integral part of our society and social interaction with others. From the 9-5 office job where we spend our day actively working in the cyber world and community, we come home and network with our friends and family whilst participate in online auctions, blogs and personal web pages for past time activities. The Y2K scenario reminded everyone how important computers had become in any working day. From white collar workers through to manufacturing - we all need computers to work efficiently and effectively within the daily time restraints we conform to.

Today we are experiencing a change in attitudes with respect to recycling in general and computers are no exception. We can pick up a magazine or a newspaper and learn about the hazardous chemicals which make up our highly valued computers. Making changes for a better environment in our own way is made by our personal convictions and values to help the world become a healthier place tomorrow. You can take a small step and recycle your computer today and make a difference!
